Junior’s Roasted Coffee is a micro-roastery based out of Portland, Oregon, founded and owned by Caryn and Mike Nelson. They started Junior’s in Florida after moving there for graduate school in October 2014. The Nelsons were eager to plant roots in their new home and serve a role in their community by sharing their love and craft of quality coffee. They’ve since relocated back to their “adopted” home of Portland, Oregon where, along with business partners Carrie Lind and Toby Roberts, they opened a cafe named Guilder in the Alameda-Irvington neighborhood. The roastery opened inside the cafe in the fall of 2017.

Mike brings over 10 years of experience in the industry where he has worked as a barista, consultant, roaster, and trainer with specialty coffee companies in Portland, Oregon, New York, NY, Sweden, and Denmark. He earned a MSc in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science at Lund University in Sweden and a MSc in Geography at Florida State University. His academic research focuses on climate change’s effect on coffee farming, specifically how coffee leaf rust impacts coffee production systems. Mike heads up green buying, roasting, quality control, and education for Junior’s.

Caryn holds degrees in Food and Beverage Management and Business Administration. She has worked for a variety of nonprofit organizations including serving two years as an AmeriCorps VISTA member. Prior to her experience in nonprofits, she was a barista, server and bartender. Caryn oversees administration, marketing and sales for Junior’s.

Edith (Edi) Sweetie is a cat who lives with the Nelsons. She’s in charge of chasing coffee beans and being adorable.
